Medical Studies Programs
Administrator: LIU Admin

LIU has Medical Studies Programs at 3 distinct levels:

1. Preparation for Medical Studies (PFM) (credits to be awarded are typically towards Diploma, Certificate or Bachelors degrees in Medical Sciences). This course, often termed the ‘pre-medical’ studies, is suitable for all health sciences students, and especially for those who are aiming for medical school admission, or who may already have a place, but want to review what they should know before taking that place in order to get ahead in their studies. It is also highly appropriate for members of the public who want or need to know more about one or more body systems (eg in connection with a health problem), for teachers, academics and researchers in the biological sciences, and for those in the pharmaceutical industry.

The course comprises 23 modules nominally each of one study week duration: the modules require little or no prior knowledge of biology or science, but the later modules build on concepts developed in earlier modules. The PFM course is especially suitable for online delivery via the Internet and provides an ideal environment for facilitating the Registrar's pre-enrolment activites and student communications.  For more details <click here>.

2. Medical Undergraduate (credits to be awarded are typically towards the degrees of Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery, Doctor of Medicine, Bachelor of Medical Science, etc). A level of knowledge equivalent to that achieved through the PFM program (above) is assumed; however beyond that the modules are largely self-sufficient and stand-alone, and can be taken independently. The entire course would normally be taken by medical students, but selected modules are equally useful for dental, veterinary and allied health sciences students, as well as others (including the general public) with a need to understand the workings of one or more selected body systems in greater detail.

We divide these studies into the theory and the practical as below:

  • Basic Bio-Medical Sciences (BBMS) - the theory underpinning medical practice, often termed the ‘pre-clinical’ studies and including the theory elements of such disciplines as anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pathology, medicine, surgery and so on; and including also studies in practice management, clinical info rmation systems, decision and risk analysis.  For more details <click here>.
  • Clinical Sciences and Professional Studies (CSPS) - the practical aspects of the study of medicine, including the hands-on bedside care of patients, clinical and laboratory investigative services, inter-personal skills and communications, ethics, law and professionalisation in medicine etc.  For more details <click here>.

The BBMS course comprises 15 study modules (each of a nominal 5 weeks duration), and CSPS comprises 22 modules each of a nominal 4 weeks duration, making a total program of 163 study weeks duration: this is normally taken over a 4-5 year period, including vacations, self-study periods and formal assessments. The Medical Undergraduate course is updated continuously and made available to you and your teaching faculty via their login to the LIU Online Campus. LIU 'template' materials can be easily complemented with local content to produce the in-classroom teaching 'package'.

3. Medical Postgraduate (credits to be awarded are typically towards the degrees of Doctor of Medicine, Master of Medicine or Surgery, Doctor of Philosophy etc). These studies are for students who already hold medical qualifications and have considerable practical and/or clinical experience in general or specialist fields.  For more details <click here>.

Our membership of international medical education and practice experts will produce tailored modules on specialist topic areas to meet your needs. Modules can be made suitable for online delivery via the Internet too as required.
